  3. SLEEP VIDEO

'Sleep Video' is an exploration into the subconscious mind and a look into the mysticism of the night, obstinate remaining despite the enlightenment of the modern world. As the stream-of-consciousness prose poem 'Conscious Thought from Late Evening Until Morning' that 'narrates' the video suggests, this project attempts to breakdown and visualise the bizarre and fevered chaos of the dreaming mind using rational and matter-of-fact language and imagery. I find black and white highly dramatic, less destructive compared to colour, and it creates a fitting atmosphere for the subject of the film. Sometimes our illogical, obscure, and chaotic dreams are remembered in black and white.

Directed by Karina Azlanova · Experimental · 5 min

The nights are the hardest. While silence envelops the apartment, Beatrice begins to hear disturbing noises and see shadows that turn out to be only figments of her imagination. His mental state slowly deteriorates, fueled by paranoia and anguish. He begins to suspect that there is something sinister hidden in his apartment, but it is nothing more than the manifestation of his fears and stress. When a vaccine is found, the authorities force the entire population to take it, including Beatrice. Hoping that the vaccine can bring some normality back to his life, he undergoes the treatment. However, the days pass and Beatrice begins to develop strange feelings of anxiety and paranoia related to the vaccine and the isolation situation. Each dose increases his terror and his hallucinations become more vivid. The border between reality and delirium is becoming increasingly thin. Beatrice keeps a diary in which she writes down her confused thoughts and growing fears. The diary becomes a refuge, but also a chronicle of his descent into madness. She often dreams of being chased or surveilled, believing that the authorities are monitoring her through the vaccine. The border between reality and delirium becomes increasingly thin. Bea is convinced that there is a conspiracy against her orchestrated through the vaccine. He begins to keep a diary in which he writes down his confused thoughts and his growing fears. Her sanity finally crumbles when a doctor arrives to administer another dose of the vaccine. Bea, in the grip of paranoia, believes that the doctor is part of a plot to poison her. In a fit of madness and terror, she kills him, convinced she is defending herself from a non-existent threat. This tragic act is the pinnacle of her descent into madness, a reflection of the strain and isolation the pandemic has inflicted on her.

  31. Death of Mandanin

The film is a surreal short film in which the filmmaker was looking to converse and resonate with the film-making history, especially the part dates back to the last century. Though the movie is shot with modern digital devices, not with the traditional means of film-making. The filmmaker is also looking to provoke thoughts on the impact of modern devices on the ways of making new films. Since Un Chien Andalou (1928 France), numerous talented directors have started their very own depiction of human’s deepest desires in their works. The filmmaker of Death of Mandanin believed people’s hidden consciousness has served as a major drive that spurs people climb up the social ladder. However, in a society without a fair competition where almost all the dreams are flightless, one could hardly realize what he or she desires. It is also a manifestation of the death of people’s spiritual freedom. The film co-opted chapters from the Bible as hidden clues, it also blended in the film with elements such as Tarot, psychoanalysis, philosophy, poetry, contemporary communist movements, etc. The film describes the struggles of the people at the bottom from all aspects. The film conveys a tragic view that idealism will be disillusioned when suppressed by the social structure, but the film is also a heroic lament, at least it conveys a positive belief to find the way to ultimate freedom. The artistic feature of the film is that it fictionalizes a dialogue between God and the sleepwalker which also mocks the reality.

Set against the tranquil backdrop of a park, Joseph recalls a poignant encounter with Emily, an artist who sketches her innermost thoughts. Through a blend of vivid imagination and heartfelt reality, the film captures the beauty of fleeting moments and the power of unspoken connections.

Directed by Ameya Bhagwat · Romance · 12 min

  37. Memories of the Future

"Memories of the Future" is a cinematic reflection on the growing crisis of space debris, blending science, metaphor, and artistic abstraction. The film is presented from the perspective of a child—a future Earthling—who looks back at humanity’s actions with both wonder and concern. This perspective shapes the visual style: everything is slightly exaggerated, much like a child’s drawing, but rendered in a futuristic way. The satellites appear oversized, the debris fields impossibly dense, and the vastness of space feels surreal. It is a new era of storytelling, where scientific reality meets the boundless imagination of a child. At the heart of the film is a seemingly insignificant object—a single bolt. It drifts through space, small and unassuming against the backdrop of immense orbital structures. But its presence is deceptive. The bolt represents overlooked dangers, a silent consequence of human negligence. As it moves through the cosmos, it ultimately cracks a camera lens, distorting the view—a metaphorical warning that ignoring a problem does not make it disappear. Like a tiny mistake that spirals into disaster, the bolt embodies the unintended consequences of human actions. The film’s aesthetic is deeply influenced by classical opera and ballet, using Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, 2nd Movement to transform the slow-motion collision of debris into a haunting "space ballet." The choice of music elevates the visuals, creating a dreamlike yet unsettling atmosphere where beauty and destruction coexist. By incorporating real audio recordings—Sputnik 1’s signal, abstract radio transmissions, and Earth's magnetic field sounds—the film merges fiction with reality, grounding its imaginative visuals in scientific authenticity. The child’s voice, generated artificially, adds an emotional layer, as if the future is speaking directly to the past.

  113. LIN ZHENGYU:TEAR AND FIRE

Tears and Fire is an animated short film adapted from the folk myths and legends of the Hakka communities in southern Jiangxi (Ganzhou region). The project draws on long-standing local oral traditions centered on Lin Xian Erlang—Lin Zhengyu. From a young age, Lin Xian Erlang studied Daoist practices in the mountains and returned to his village to protect the people using his spiritual powers. However, in the course of avenging his enemies, he tragically lost his young children and ultimately his own life. When his village was threatened, he used his final strength to defend it, eventually ascending a guardian deity. The creators conducted extensive field research, genealogical studies, and oral history collection to reinterpret traditional narratives in a contemporary context. Parts of the production also employed Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) techniques. The project explores innovative expressions of local cultural resources within animation, filling a gap in the representation of Hakka culture in this medium. The film has received support and attention from institutions such as the Longnan Hakka and Yangming Culture Research Center and the Zhengyu Temple Council in Chenglong Town, Longnan City, Jiangxi Province. The narrative revolves around themes of fate and personal choice, portraying Lin Zhengyu’s journey as he protects his people, unintentionally killed his adopted son, and ultimately transcends to divinity. Visually, the film blends Hakka architecture and traditional clothing with Chinese artistic forms such as ink painting, paper-cutting, and shadow puppetry. In its sound design, it incorporates Hakka dialects and mountain songs, creating a distinct regional cultural identity and an Eastern aesthetic.
