  19. Death of Mandanin

The film is a surreal short film in which the filmmaker was looking to converse and resonate with the film-making history, especially the part dates back to the last century. Though the movie is shot with modern digital devices, not with the traditional means of film-making. The filmmaker is also looking to provoke thoughts on the impact of modern devices on the ways of making new films. Since Un Chien Andalou (1928 France), numerous talented directors have started their very own depiction of human’s deepest desires in their works. The filmmaker of Death of Mandanin believed people’s hidden consciousness has served as a major drive that spurs people climb up the social ladder. However, in a society without a fair competition where almost all the dreams are flightless, one could hardly realize what he or she desires. It is also a manifestation of the death of people’s spiritual freedom. The film co-opted chapters from the Bible as hidden clues, it also blended in the film with elements such as Tarot, psychoanalysis, philosophy, poetry, contemporary communist movements, etc. The film describes the struggles of the people at the bottom from all aspects. The film conveys a tragic view that idealism will be disillusioned when suppressed by the social structure, but the film is also a heroic lament, at least it conveys a positive belief to find the way to ultimate freedom. The artistic feature of the film is that it fictionalizes a dialogue between God and the sleepwalker which also mocks the reality.

From the enigmatic appearance of a crow at the story’s inception to its watchful gaze in the finale, every layer of existence unfolds under its surveillance. This mystical creature symbolises the possibility that both our tangible world and virtual dimensions exist within a higher-dimensional reality—a realm beyond human comprehension. Metaphor In virtual realms, we can become anyone we aspire to be. We are protagonists across infinite worlds, transcending limitations through metamorphosis. If we perceive the virtual as real, it becomes our reality; if we anchor ourselves in the tangible, it solidifies as truth. Every illusion holds truth, and every truth carries illusion. All that is imagined manifests as real, while the "real" dissolves into the ephemeral.

  86. Heaven & Hell

In this film, I’ve sought to create a multi-sensory audit of a world in collapse, bridging the widening chasm between political hypocrisy and our fractured social reality. By centering the film on the recurring motif of a fraying flag, I wanted to expose the terrifying fragility of democracy as it buckles under the weight of human greed. I chose to set this human turmoil against the indifferent majesty of nature—where falling snow and rising oceans serve as a silent witness to our choices. Complemented by Veryan’s haunting soundscape and Liz Helman’s narration, the work stands as a cinematic elegy for the marginalized. Ultimately, it is a poetic reminder that while the powerful debate our future, the heaviest burden is always borne by those least responsible for the crisis.

  111. Memories of the Future

"Memories of the Future" is a cinematic reflection on the growing crisis of space debris, blending science, metaphor, and artistic abstraction. The film is presented from the perspective of a child—a future Earthling—who looks back at humanity’s actions with both wonder and concern. This perspective shapes the visual style: everything is slightly exaggerated, much like a child’s drawing, but rendered in a futuristic way. The satellites appear oversized, the debris fields impossibly dense, and the vastness of space feels surreal. It is a new era of storytelling, where scientific reality meets the boundless imagination of a child. At the heart of the film is a seemingly insignificant object—a single bolt. It drifts through space, small and unassuming against the backdrop of immense orbital structures. But its presence is deceptive. The bolt represents overlooked dangers, a silent consequence of human negligence. As it moves through the cosmos, it ultimately cracks a camera lens, distorting the view—a metaphorical warning that ignoring a problem does not make it disappear. Like a tiny mistake that spirals into disaster, the bolt embodies the unintended consequences of human actions. The film’s aesthetic is deeply influenced by classical opera and ballet, using Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, 2nd Movement to transform the slow-motion collision of debris into a haunting "space ballet." The choice of music elevates the visuals, creating a dreamlike yet unsettling atmosphere where beauty and destruction coexist. By incorporating real audio recordings—Sputnik 1’s signal, abstract radio transmissions, and Earth's magnetic field sounds—the film merges fiction with reality, grounding its imaginative visuals in scientific authenticity. The child’s voice, generated artificially, adds an emotional layer, as if the future is speaking directly to the past.
